grammar for tesol

12. Grammar for TESOL
According to Cook (2001:19) "Grammar is considered by many linguists to be the central area of the language around which other areas such as pronunciation and vocabulary revolve." Yet a trend is developing across some EFL zones to reduce grammar lessons in favor of lessons requiring practice on spoken skills. In Korea (2005) major companies are abandoning the requirement for proficiency in grammar and placing the emphasis on communicating in English. Ellis (1994:112) notes "...a major limiting factor in SLA research has been its preoccupation with grammar."

Assignment: Grammar for TESOL
Should native teachers of English teach grammar in EFL and ESL zones or should this be the domain of bilingual speakers only? Is there a distinction to be considered between EFL and ESL zones?

Module Statement of Purpose: Grammar for TESOL
Grammar involves three areas. Teaching grammar - the students learning of grammar, and the teachers own learning of grammatical principals. In this module, we will concentrate on the the learning and teaching of grammar for students. Those who carry on to the practicum will receive instruction in the principles of grammar and grammar teaching in EFL/ESL zones. In EFL zones, foreign teachers take little part in teaching grammar, which is left to the NNS to teach (non native speaker)
