This
is your first introduction to the classroom and issues involving teaching. 1.
You are about to undertake a TESOL Certificate course. This may be your first
look at what Teaching in a Foreign Country means. In
this Module we introduce three articles:- The
first article considers what does it mean to be an English Language Teacher. Read
this article first. Don't worry if you do not understand everything - the pieces
will fall into place. Article:
An
Expose of 'What Is An English Teacher'. Secondly,
you should read the article that looks in a general way at the differences in
three countries, Greece, and EFL country, Korea an EFL country, and Czech Republic,
EFL country. See A
Comparison of Korean, Czech and Greek Second Language Learning Systems ESL
means English as Second Language -that is, the English language is already found
in that country. Example, those non English speakers who go to live in the USA
(Hispanic, Mexican.) EFL
means English as a Foreign Language. In countries like Korea, Japan, for example,
the only English is the spoken in classrooms - hence EFL. The
next article to
read to complete this Module, is 'Assessing
Dictionaries in Asian EFL usage.' This topic considers the value if using
Dictionaries in the EFL/ESL classroom. You should also look at the article entitled,
Dictionaries
Usage in EFL and Learner Development Finally,
read The
relationship of school year, sex and proficiency on the use of learning strategies
in learning English of Korean junior high school students for an example
of the differences in learning styles that boy and girl students may show.
Your
assignment:- (1)
Imagine you are entering the classroom (let's say for this exercise we are in
Asia) for the first time. It is expected you will be teaching this class for the
next year. The students are aged 12-13 western age, (13-14 Asian age) and have
been studying English for about 3-4 years. Your
School Director has asked you to spend time getting to know the students and introducing
yourself and anything you wish to do. Write
your response discussing:- (a) what you would like to achieve in that lesson (b)
the issues that you would consider (c) and how you would present the lesson.
(d) how you would conclude the lesson - the last 5 -6 minutes might involve
a fun game for example (e) after the lesson what steps (analysis) could you
take to review your lesson style and how it went?
Assume these students
are very excited to see you and may have many questions. Submit
the answer to asianefltesolc@yahoo.com
and include your student number. Back
