Teaching English to Young Learners in Taiwan: Issues Relating to Teaching, Teacher Education, Teaching Materials and Teacher Perspectives

Since 2005, it has been government policy in Taiwan to introduce English in Grade 3 of primary schooling (when learners are generally age 9). The overall aim of this research project was to investigate some of the problems associated with the implementation of this policy by combining research involving teacher cognition with research involving the criterion-referenced analysis of a sample of textbooks produced in Taiwan for young learners and a sample of lessons taught in Taiwanese primary schools.

The objective of this action research project was to find the usefulness of decision-forcing case studies in helping to prepare new and experienced English as foreign language teachers (EFL) taking place in Western Chungnam province of South Korea. Nine decision-forcing cases were written for two Korean English Teachers (KETs) and two Native English Speakers (NESs) with one of each experienced or new to EFL teaching.

A Metaphor Analysis of Preservice EFL Teachers’ Beliefs regarding Professional Identity

This research investigated preservice EFL teachers’ beliefs about their roles as English teachers in Japan. Objectives were three-fold: (a) to elucidate preservice EFL teachers’ beliefs regarding professional identity through a metaphor analysis in three research phases (i.e., pre-, mid-, and post-practicum phases), (b) to explore preservice EFL teachers’ underlying beliefs hidden behind metaphors, particularly regarding professional identity in the three research phases, and thereby (c) to examine preservice EFL teachers’ professional identity formation observed during the term of the investigation.
