Bonifacio T. Cunanan is the Assistant Dean of the College of Arts and Letters in Bulacan State University where he also teaches linguistics, translation, and stylistics. He earned his Ph.D. in Linguistics from the Philippine Normal University, Manila. He is interested in second language research, text linguistics, and automated discourse analysis.
Abstract
This paper shows how the use of some language resources can unravel to the reader the world view of the persona or the writer in a literary work. Drawing on Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG), it attempts to make transitivity framework accessible to teachers of English as a second language (ESL). It aims to raise one‟s awareness on the confluence of language structures in a prose written in the stream of consciousness (SOC) technique. Also, this paper shows the connection between linguistics and literature (Hişmanoğlu, 2005) by using an alternative framework within the context of a literature-based language program. This attempt is a step towards helping students understand how the language of a given text creates authenticity in fiction. This paper aims to illustrate how a reader can capture the elusive and subjective mind style of the author or the persona by attending to the author‟s linguistic choice
